Plan the move

Target move date: Work start date: Rent / buy / undecided:

6-8 WEEKS BEFORE — Define your search

  • Confirm your regular campus building, work schedule and college contact.
  • Ask your LVC contact about parking, permits and any applicable relocation assistance.
  • Set your total monthly housing budget, move-in funds and moving reserve.
  • Choose essential home features and compare both household commutes, if relevant.
  • Confirm the legal municipality of each address; a mailing address is not a boundary.

3-5 WEEKS BEFORE — Test the fit

  • Tour homes and test the complete trip: front door, parking space, campus building.
  • For rentals, verify availability, lease dates, fees, pets, parking and utility responsibility.
  • For purchases, review financing, inspections, property costs and possession timing.
  • Check internet service at the exact address, including upload speed and installation.
  • If relevant, verify school assignment and enrollment directly with the school district.

My three priority areas:

Settle in with fewer surprises

1-2 WEEKS BEFORE — Coordinate the handoff

  • Confirm lease start or possession in writing before committing to moving logistics.
  • Arrange electricity, heating fuel, water/sewer, refuse and internet as applicable.
  • Confirm loading access, mover parking, keys, storage and a backup housing plan.
  • Schedule address changes and arrange transfer of prescriptions and relevant records.
  • Keep move-day essentials, medications, chargers and important documents accessible.

FIRST WEEK — Establish the basics

  • Complete your home handoff; record condition and locate shutoffs and equipment.
  • Confirm collection days, recycling instructions and any required local arrangements.
  • Rehearse your first campus arrival, including your assigned parking and walk.
  • Locate groceries, a pharmacy and healthcare options that match your coverage.
  • Check the LVC calendar so campus events or breaks do not surprise your routine.

FIRST MONTH — Make the area yours

  • Visit the library and try a local park, Main Street stop or community event.
  • Review the actual commute and utility bills; adjust your routine and budget.
  • If renting first, note what you have learned before revisiting a purchase search.
